Hi there! I’m Bill Schmidt. I’m from Goshen, NY and I have a fabulous girlfriend. I program websites, facebook tabs, iphone apps, all that fun stuff. I finished my associates degree in Liberal Arts at SUNY Ulster in Stone Ridge NY. After doing my time behind the courtesy counter at the local Shop Rite, I decided to move on to bigger and better things. I went to SUNYIT in Utica, NY to get my bachelors in Computer Science.
My focus in college was primarily web programming, though the school didn’t offer very good courses in that regard. The web programming course they offered was well… dated. We programmed in CGI-Perl, and with my previous experience in PHP it was like going back to the stone age. Everything seemed needlessly complex; why should I worry about all this query string bullshit when I can do the same thing with a simple $POST or $GET global? Another thing that bothered me was the instructor’s use of old web standards. HTML tags in all caps, tables galore, CSS? what’s that? *Shudder*
The only other web course was a 2 credit Microsoft Frontpage filler class taught by a grad student. Instead of doing anything like what was taught, I hand coded the HTML/CSS for all my projects. I’m a firm believer in doing all of that stuff by hand anyway. I had to teach myself most of what I know.
One thing that did help me in college was that Dr. Confer taught a lot about embedded systems. Because when the refrigerator has a computer in it? it’s time to understand just how pervasive technology has become. That knowledge base came in useful when I started programing for iOS.
These are some of my technical skills:
- HTML
- CSS
- JavaScript
- AJAX
- jQuery
- PHP
- MySQL
- WordPress
- Joomla
- Objective-C
- Photoshop & Flash
